"John Cutcliffe, of Damage b. 1655, who, during his father and mother's lifetime, married Margaret, daughter of Robert Burgoyne of Southmolton, co. Devon, as appears by Indenture of Settlement, dated 9th Oct. 1675 (27 Charles II) whereby the Ilfracombe estates were, subject to the estate and interest therein of John Cutcliffe the elder and his wife Eleanor, settled on the issue male of the marriage. By an arrangement between the father and son, in 1686, the life estate of the former in the Barton of Damage was surrendered to the latter. John Cutcliffe died 1729, and was buried on the 10th of July in that year, at Ilfracombe, where his wife Margaret was also interred 9th Nov. 1728. the issue of the marriage of John Cutcliffe and Margaret Burgoyne were seven sons and five daughters."
