"Charles Cutcliffe, their,( John Cutcliffe and Eleanor Chichester), eldest son, who died s.p. and was buried 1670 at Swimbridge, where, in the church, is a monument to his memory, bearing a very flattering inscription in Latin and surmounted by his portrait, painted on copper. The Rev. J.F. Chantes, M.S.F.S.A. said in his book, The Church of St. James Swymbridge, 'Perhaps the most interesting of those still in the church (he is writing about inscribed tombstones) is that of Charles Cutcliffe, the eldest son and heir of Charles Cutcliffe, Esq., of Damage, near Ilfracombe, by his marriage with Eleanor, daughter of Tristram Chichester of Hearsdon. At the top of the monument is a very beautiful oval portrait in oils, flanked with the arms of Cutcliffe, Gules three pruning hooks, Arg. and Cutcliffe impaling Chichester Chequy Or and Gules a chief Vais'. Tugwell in his North Devon hand book, speaks of it as 'a portrait on copper said to be the work of Sir Peter Lely'."
