Narrative

 

ÒNicholl was a police constable in the Swansea Docks force when, at the age of 22, he married my grandmother Louisa (known to the family as ÒLouieÓ).... Whether he crossed the Atlantic to escape his creditors or with the idea of making his fortune and sending for his family, I donÕt know. When he died in 1913, heÕd left his wife on her own for 20 years to bring up their children on the income she earned by running a boarding house, augmented by irregular small contributions from him.Ó A number of letters from Nicholas to his family are in the possession of the Author.
