Narrative

Source, Mary Young : Roland was placed in the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home in Xenia, Ohio on August 30, 1897. He was discharged on March 21, 1898. Roland served in the Spanish American War in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 1902 to 1904. He also served in the Ohio National Guard, Camp Perry, Ohio. Roland married Lillian Elizabeth Stofft in St. Ann, Illinois on Thanksgiving Day, 1910. Both Roland and Ann worked at teh Southeastern Wheel and Rim Company in St. Ann, Illinois. Roland worked as a machinist and Lillian worked as a secretary. Roland also worked for the Tip Top Bread Company in Phoebus, Virginia for 1917 to 1918. In 1942, Roland was employed as a civilian painter of the shipyards with the U.S. Coast Guard in Jacksonville, Florida. Between 1943 and 1944, Roland worked for St. Luke's Hospital Association located at Ninth and Boulevard. Roland enlisted in the Florida State Guard, Company B, 3rd Battalion on November 17, 1943 as a private. On September 18, 1944, Roland attained the rank of Private First Class. On January 2. 1945 Roland's Company went to Tallahassee, Florida for the Governor's Inauguration. On August 6, 1946, Roland attained the rank of Corporal. He was Honorably Discharged by reason of Unit Deactivation on September 24, 1946. Discharge papers show that his qualification in arms: 12 gauge shotgun; decorations, service medals, citations: Florida Service Ribbon, Metitorious Service Ribbon; Character: Excellent; and Remarks: This man was an excellent soldier and is highly recommended for reenlistment. Roland was one of the first Scout Masters in Jacksonville, Florida. He was a wonderful grandfather, storyteller and artist. Roland was active in the live of his granddoughter, Mary E. Young; in Chruch, Scouts and school. He belonged to many churches during his lifetime including Methodist, Episcopla and the Weslyan Methodist. Lillian Cutcliffe died August 20, 1950 in Jacksonville, Florida. She is buried in Restlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida. Roland died October 2, 1955 at Episcopal Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in Washington, D.C. and was buried on October 4, 1955 at Restlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida.
