Narrative

Source, Mary Young: Member of Boy Scouts fo Amerixa, in his father's troop in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1929 Roland went to the LL Cook School of Electricity in Chicago, Illinois. In 1931 Roland was employed by Western Union in Jacksonville, Florida. While he was serving in the Civilian Conservation Camp in Alabama Roland met and married Elizabeth (Bettye) Athey of Manassas, Virginia. Roland and Elizabeth were married on April 4, 1936 in Athens, Alabama. Roland served in World War II as a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Cumberland Sound, AV-17, a unit of the Third Fleet, United Navy. Roland was aboard ship when it entered Tokyo Bay, for the purpose of accepting the surrender fo the Imperial Japanese Governmetn and assisting in the subsequent occupation of Japan. Roland was in the U.S. Naval Reserves attached to Barracks 6d, Group 683 at Potomac Naval River Command, Naval Gun Factory, Washington, D.C. Ordered to Active Duty on August 10, 1950, Roland served on the U.S.S. Bryce Canyon during the Korean Conflict. Roland retired from the U.S. Federal Government, U.S. Supreme Court after 36 years of service. While working for the government, Roland worked part-time for Sears Roebuck and Comp[any for 20 years. After retireing from government service Roland went to work at Sears full time. he retired from Sears in 1979. Roland participated in several Archeological Digs at the "City of David" in Israel, that were sponsored by Marion College, Marion, Indiana. On his first Archeological Dig Roland was baptised in the River Jordan. On his last dig he was interviewed about a specific piece he found. This interview was part of a televised program on the archeological site by the BBC. These archeological trips were a very important part of Roland's life. As was his church. Roland belonged to many churches during his lifetime including Methodist Episcopal, Weslyan Methodist and United Methodist. Roland was a member of the Northwest Alington Lions Culb and a member of the American Legion, Post 9, Jacksonville, Florida. He was active in the lives of his daughter and grandchildren; in church, Scouts, school, sports and in other activities. Bettye was also active in all of her daughters activities.
