In the year 2001, letters from James M. Cusick to his wife and children written in 1864 and 1865 are in the possession of Thomas F. Cutcliffe. These letters were written by James who was serving in the Union Army in Louisiana at the end of the Civil War. In one of these letters James communicates his feelings upon recieving information on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. These letters reflect an excellent command of the English language and a superior education for that time in history.
