James Reiley {Riley or Reilly}, private marine 58th, {Plymouth} Company,served at Port Jackson in 1788 in the company of Captain James Meredith{qv}. On the 4th of March 1790 he was sent by Sirus to Norfolk Island,where on the 4th February 1792 he was a settler at Crewell Bay on 45acres. In October 1793 he was living with Mary Phillips {gs} and 3children. He sold part of his land in September 1794 to Darcy Wentworth,and in January 1797 purchased 20 acres, from John McCarty {qv} for 19pounds. His holdings at the end of November 1794 by grant and lease werelot no. 73 and no. 97. He died as James Reilly at Norfolk Island on 5thOctober 1801. His son James stayed with him till he died.

James Reiley, a marine, embarked on the Charlotte charged with keepingorder on transport. In August 1787, he was accused of having improperintercourse with some of the convict women, but was acquitted becauseconvicts testimonies were inadmissible. He was later attached to CaptainMeredith?s Company. In 1792 he settled at Norfolk Island, and suppliedthe government with pork. He was buried on Norfolk Island on 15th October1801.
