1819, by Reverend W. Cowper, Thomas Hammant, aged 40, Master
Mariner and Susannah Wise, aged 22, daughter of Richard, by special
licence issued at Windsor the 4th October 1819, witnessed by Matilda

Susannah were trying to make the age gap seem less than it actually
was. Thomas was 46 years old while Susannah was only 17 years old.</i></span></font></div>
<div align="left"><font size="2"><span style="font-size:10pt"><i>In the early colonial days, </i><b><i>Marriage Licences</i></b><i> unlike </i><b><i>Marriage Banns</i></b><i>, had to be paid for, but
were a quicker way of getting married and were considered more </i><b><i>&quot;private&quot;</i></b><i>. Because of the
expense involved people married by licence tended to be those of wealth or position. The fee
in 1811 for a marriage by licence in the colony was five guineas [i.e. &#163;5/5/-]</i>.</span></font></div>
